HOW TO KEEP COLD AIR OUT

Large balcony windows and doors are nice, but they’re a big source of heat loss in the winter. We take a look at how to keep cold air from coming through windows and balcony doors.

Place Weatherstrips

Weatherstripping is basically a strip of material that makes the seal tighter between the window or door and its frame.

1

Add Some Door Sweeps

Foam sweeps are best for swinging doors while rubber is best for sliding doors. You could also make your own by stuffing socks or tights with fabric and then sticking it to the door.

2

Caulk the Frame

Even in newer buildings, the insulating caulking can perish after about 5 years or so. This is a big culprit for airflow that’s pretty easy to overlook.

3

Install Shutters

Installing shutters might seem like overkill, but it’s an easy way to add another layer of insulation. Of course, they do come with the disadvantage of blocking light.
