Fall is an amazing time of the year. The air is crisp, the colors are amazing and pumpkin spice lattes return. For many of us, it’s also the last few months that we can regularly enjoy our outdoor space before the winter weather sets in.

Here we’ll discuss ways to bring those amazing fall vibes into your balcony space so you can enjoy every last second of the outdoors before winter.

When to Decorate for Fall

There are no set rules for when you can decorate for fall, but most people start in late August or early September.

Timing is also very much dependent on where you live – if you live in an area where the weather turns cooler sooner rather than later, you can probably start decorating on the early side. Either way, you’ll know you’re good to decorate for fall once you start seeing Halloween decorations and candy at the grocery store.

10 Fall Balcony Décor Ideas

1. Bring in fall colors

Decorating your balcony for fall doesn’t mean you have to completely transform your space. In fact, you can create fall vibes by making a few simple color additions by incorporating reds, oranges, yellows, browns and golds into your space. As demonstrated in the photo above, this can be easily achieved by simply updating your everyday decorative pillows with ones in fall colors.

It really doesn’t take much to create a fall inspired balcony with colors alone, and you can also bring in other items such as throws, flowers, rugs, etc.

2. Create a cozy vibe

Fall is the ultimate “sweater weather” as we start dressing for the change in season. It’s generally not cold enough where we need to bundle up like it’s winter as sweaters and blankets are sufficient to keep us warm.

This is the exact kind of mood that you can replicate on your balcony. Add patterns and textures that invoke a cozy vibe – chunky throws, textured pillows and fuzzy rugs are just a few ideas. You can also incorporate patterns that are reminiscent of fall such as gingham, plaid and wool.

3.  Add rustic, natural elements

“Harvest” literally means “autumn”, and fall is harvest season. Anything you can add that invokes thoughts or feelings of an autumn harvest will get your balcony ready for fall. Think pieces of wood, baskets, pumpkins, squash, hay, etc. Even something simple like a wooden tray will work!

4. Decorate your railing

All balconies have a railing or wall space, and this is a perfect place to bring in some fall décor. Add some fall-inspired string lights or autumn garland to spruce up your balcony railing. It will take you next to no time to set up, and you’ll easily be able to take it down for the change in season.

5. Bring in fall scents

Add scents to your space that are reminiscent of fall – cinnamon, apple, pumpkin spice, brown sugar, nutmeg, maple are just a few examples. Fall scented tea light candles can replace what you normally use on your balcony. You can even find fall-scented citronella candles that will work double duty and help you detract bugs from your space as well.

Technically this won’t make your balcony look prepared for fall, but adding certain scents will get you in the fall mood when you’re sitting outside.

6. Fall colored plants and flowers

Updating your general décor isn’t the only way to get your balcony ready for fall! Plants and flowers are great ways to decorate by season because they can easily be updated and changed out. Focus on reds, oranges and yellows.

If you prefer the Halloween vibe to the general fall vibe, there are also a ton of plants that are perfect for Halloween!

7. Create a Pumpkin display

Nothing says fall quite like pumpkins. Creating a mini pumpkin display on your tables or larger display on your flooring is an excellent way to bring fall into your balcony space. You can go the easy route and just add orange pumpkins you purchase locally, or you go a step further and make a more elaborate display by painting pumpkins in whites, golds and blacks.

8. Bring the Outdoors Indoors

Fall foliage is a sight to behold in itself – there is even an entire tourism industry centered around it. If your balcony has a beautiful view of the trees changing colors, make this the focal point of your outdoor space and reduce your balcony decorations to a minimum.

9. Focus on Halloween

If you prefer to decorate more based on holiday than season, consider creating a Halloween-inspired balcony. There are tons of ways to go about this, from adding classy Halloween decorations to downright terrifying ones.

10. Turn Pumpkins into Flowerpots

If you like the idea of a DIY project, but you’re not necessarily a DIY person, a pumpkin flowerpot might just be the perfect project for you!
